Stone Sublimely Self-Righteous Ale

Pours like a stout, but smells like a super-hoppy IPA…what’s going on here?  In a panic, I turned the bottle around and began to read the micro-sized narrative/encyclopedia entry that Stone prints on all of their 22 oz. bottles. No truths were revealed.

Devastatingly bitter with a chalky finish.  There is no mistaking this as a Stone creation, which should be interpreted as a high compliment. Still, I have no idea what function this beer could serve (or be served at?) if not merely reminding beer geeks that such powerful and peculiar elixirs are possible.

Other beer reviews, including an unsolicited commentary from a scruffy dude at the grocery store who saw me eying the bottle, remark on chocolate flavors, but I’m convinced that fantasy is just a by-product of the dark color of the beer. Fine, what does this taste like?  We worked our way quickly through a bottle, but still can’t say. Better open another.
