Night of the Barley Wines Part II: Brooklyn Monster Ale

Brooklyn Brewing, Brooklyn, NY
Monster Ale
Barley Wine
10.8% ABV
12 oz. bottle into snifter

…monster in a bottle…

Initially this crime against nature tasted even more putrid than Old Horizontal. It smelled overwhelmingly acrid and sour, like dentist chemicals or rotten hops. The taste was also significantly off-putting. But after much swirling, sipping, and spitting,  it started to taste almost good. Not quite good enough to finish the whole bottle, but good enough to cautiously enjoy. As it breathed, gross sour/sharp tastes transformed into subtly sour, refreshingly sour, and borderline pleasantly sour

Neither Old Horizontal nor Monster Ale hit the spot, but at least they aren’t boring. They have body and bite, topped off with a little bit of grossness.

Note: Perry does not have a Barley Wine “spot,” that can be “hit.”

  1. Not quite good enough to finish the whole bottle BETWEEN THREE PEOPLE.

  2. One need never hit anything; one can just swing. I swear that Hair of the Dog Fred and Alesmith Old Numbskull are worth swinging at.
