Terrapin Hopsecutioner

Terrapin Beer Co., Athens, GA
Hopsecutioner
IPA
7.2% ABV
12 oz. bottle into pint glass

Terrapin is one of my favorite southeastern breweries, so I was eager to crack open their “killer IPA”. Check this nice video about Terrapin’s history:

The slogan for this brew is “YOU MAY LOSE YOUR HOPHEAD OVER THIS ONE!” and the label features a turtle dressed as an executioner supervising a massive collection of hops in a guillotine. It is true that I “lost my hophead,”  but not in the euphoric way that they intended.  The Hopsecutioner misses the mark by forgoing any semblance of balance in aroma, taste, and body. Get the turtle away from that guillotine.

This IPA has a forlorn, stale hops nose. On the palate, bitterness dominates. This beer is kind of like that friend of yours who can’t tell a joke but keeps trying anyhow. Sometimes you force a laugh because you like and/or pity your friend. You mentally reconstruct what the joke was supposed to be, and how it may have been funny if properly told.

By the last sip, this hyper-bitter hop disaster had me wishing I had a picked up more of the Terrapin Wake ‘N’ Bake Coffee Oatmeal Imperial Stout instead. Anything but hops.

One Response to “Terrapin Hopsecutioner”

  1. Hm. Sounds tryable, if only because it’s compared not to any other beer (Hop Stoopid? Hop Juice? Hop Wallop? Hop on Pop? <–okay I made that one up), but rather to…bad comedy? Somehow I feel implicated. Is this beer me? Can the mere description of a beer provoke a paroxysm of narcissism? Does Hopsecutioner qualify as beer-as-catachresis? Is Ahab, Ahab?
