21st Amendment Monk’s Blood

21st Amendment Brewery, San Francisco, CA
Monk’s Blood
Belgian Strong Dark Ale
8.3% ABV

The better a beer is, the harder it is to review. Pointing out that a beer is balanced and smells good is about as clumsy and uninformative as saying that Turgenev’s Fathers and Sons is a novel about two generations of Russians.

Monk’s Blood is surrounded by a sufficient amount of mystery to intrigue even an innocent passerby, to say nothing of those “informed” by the conflicting, largely positive online reviews. One thing is for sure: you won’t mistake it for a Belgian import– the yeasts are too cleanly American.

It pours a lovely ruby/violet/brown color with raisin and floral notes on the nose. A very solid brew with a strong finish. Nice. Worth purchasing for the classy packaging alone.

This is a bit unrelated, but did you know that jazz musician Thelonius Monk was born in North Carolina? So was folk legend Doc Watson. This beer is not from North Carolina.

  1. I’m looking forward to heading over to the 21st amendment when I’m in San Fran – they look to make some great brews
