Short’s Key Lime Pie

Short’s Brewing Company, Bellaire, Michigan
Key Lime Pie
12 oz. bottle

Since the lime only shows up as a faint afterthought, this between-the-seasons quirky release would be more aptly named “Browned Marshmallows and Graham Crackers”.  Unlike the pleasant peculiarity of Short’s Strawberry Shortcake, Key Lime Pie is an oversweet marshmallow feast with no finesse. Why make a lime beer without even a hint of sourness?

As the beer warms, new levels of grossness appear in nose. As I sat there, reluctant to take another sip, a fruitfly flew directly into the glass and died. This beer tastes *nothing* like Key Lime Pie.  The only similarity is the condensed milk underbelly. Frankly, that is not a good find in a beer unless it is counterbalanced by a sour note or tempered by an assertive flavor.

Then I was struck with a harrowing realization: there are no key lime pies in Michigan! Short’s Brewing Company is partially forgiven for making this “experimental dessert” beer, since real key limes and key lime pies are not available in this state. God help them if they start exporting beer to other states.

We prefer to drink lime flavored maltodextrin with electrolytes and vanilla flavored whey protein isolate.
